We are now the Archdiocesan Commission for Ecology! While all contact information remains the same, we are in the process of updating our website and social media to reflect this change.
The Archdiocesan Office for Environment, AOE, was set-up as a forum dedicated to the cause of Environment Conservationin end-2013 by the Catholic Archdiocese of Bombay with an emphasis on creating awareness about Climate Change in the community. As part of the streamlining process and aligning with national practice, the Office became the Commission for Ecology in 2026 with Archbishop John Rodrigues as President.
The Commission is part of the Social Apostolate of the Archdiocese of Bombay headed by Bishop Allwyn D’Silva.
Green Diocese Initiative
On 1st September 2018, Oswald Cardinal Gracias, Archbishop of Bombay, launched the Green Diocese Initiative – an on-going process of caring for our common home. The AOE animates this process through a five-point thrust comprising:

Laudato Si' Diocese & VISION 2030
In 2021, the Archdiocese of Bombay embarks on a seven-year journey towards integral ecology through the Laudato Si’ Action Platform (LSAP) launched by the Vatican Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development. Thus existing Green Diocese initiatives are aligned to that of the Laudato Si' Goals, and the Archdiocese of Bombay was enrolled on the Laudato Si' Action Platform in November 2021.
A discernment process for our Archdiocese began in July-August 2021 with an outcome document released in January 2022. Priority Actions and Suggested Actions under the seven Laudato Si' Goals are emphasised in the VISION 2030 document for the Archdiocese of Bombay. It is hoped that their implementation by Parishes, Institutions and Religious Houses enables our Archdiocese to become a model of ecological stewardship and sustainable living.
